Make Every Drop Count: Capturing Rainwater

Gardening season is here, making it the perfect time to tap into nature’s gift—rainwater! Not only does rainwater contain beneficial micro-nutrients for your plants, but it’s free of the chemicals often found in tap water. Plus, collecting rain helps reduce stormwater runoff, preventing pollutants from flowing into local waterways during heavy rains.

Setting up a rain barrel is easy! A basic system collects water from a downspout and features a lower outlet for easy access. Elevating the barrel improves water flow, and some models even allow for multiple barrels to connect, increasing your collection capacity.

If you live in a condo, you can still join in! A simple method is placing containers near your balcony railing when it rains. Just snap the lids on when full, and you’ve got stored water ready for your plants.

Whichever method you choose, store your collected rainwater in a shaded spot and use it within a week or two to keep bacteria and algae at bay.

Before you start, check local guidelines to ensure rainwater collection is permitted in your area. And remember, since rainwater is untreated, it’s not for drinking. If you’re watering edible plants, apply water directly to the soil rather than the leaves.

Rainwater harvesting is an easy and rewarding way to support sustainability while reducing your water bill—one small step that makes a big impact!
